A week before the season started, Bishop Ireton Coach Rick Sofield gave his team an unconventional homework assignment.
He wanted each girl to go home and look up Alex Ovechkin's stats for the Washington Capitals. Next he wanted them to pan past all the goals, assists and other numbers that make the puck-mashing forward one of the best players in NHL history. This exercise was focused on Ovechkin's average time on the ice.
"He's the best player on the Capitals and one of the best players in the world, if not the best," Sofield said. "And he plays, at most, 20 minutes a game. A third of the game. That's how hockey is played, and I would love it if that is how we played."
