Top-ranked Good Counsel gets defensive, holds off No. 2 Ireton, 9-7

The Good Counsel girls' lacrosse team has been so prolific scoring on attack, both this spring and over the years, that its defense often gets overlooked despite being filled with just as much Division I talent. On Friday, however, the defense rescued the Falcons during a rare offensive drought.

No. 1 Good Counsel had to gut out a 9-7 win over No. 2 Bishop Ireton after netting just one goal over the final 25 minutes in a battle of nationally ranked Washington Catholic Athletic Conference teams in Alexandria. In lieu of offense, the Falcons instead forced turnovers, shut down passing lanes, collapsed on shooters and got a few clutch saves late from goalie Kiley Keatingto hold off the Cardinals.
