Softball: Zoe Dobson’s home run sparks McLean upset over No. 5 O’Connell

Zoe Dobson emerged from the shadows still shaking her head.

The softball in the McLean junior shortstop's glove indicated she had completed the risky play against O'Connell. After miscommunication with senior third baseman Sabrina Sanchez, tracking the high flyball into foul territory and pushing off the chain-link fence to make the catch, Dobson felt like she had erred. The three Knights trotting back to the visitors' dugout after loading the bases with two outs in the fifth inning were sure she hadn't.

A sixth-inning solo shot by Dobson accounted for a 1-0 upset victory over fifth-ranked O'Connell on Saturday in McLean. But a Highlanders defense that stranded nine Knights on base made the one-run margin significant.
