Avery Myers delivers No. 2 Gonzaga to a 13-9 win over top-ranked Landon

Gonzaga senior Avery Myers had been driving teammates crazy in practice with the underhanded, quick-strike shot he'd been working on the past few weeks. Tuesday, against top-ranked Landon in the Eagles' biggest nonconference game against area competition, he finally broke it out when it counted.

The low-rising missile looks more like a hockey slap shot, with the ball in Myers's lacrosse stick tantalizingly close to the turf before he whips it just as fast toward the back of the net. He scored on the move twice against the Bears, sending No. 2 Gonzaga to a 13-9 win in Bethesda.

Myers finished with four goals and two assists, raising the degree of difficulty with each shot during a second-quarter surge that saw the Eagles score seven consecutive goals to break open a contest between nationally ranked teams looking for local bragging rights.
