Field hockey notebook: Good Counsel rides a sugar rush

As the second half wound down, it appeared Good Counsel was headed for another defeat against its Washington Catholic Athletic Conference rival Monday night. St. John's led 1-0, evoking memories of last year's shutout that handed the Cadets a WCAC title at Good Counsel's expense.

Good Counsel Coach Kelly Massino called timeout with just over 15 minutes left to play. She knew exactly what her players needed to break out of their funk: milkshakes.

Massino promised her team that if they scored a tying goal in the next two minutes she would make them hand-spun milkshakes the next day. About two minutes later, Sydney Sweeney executed a pinpoint cross toMargarite Stefanelli on the left post.
