Gretchen Bennett helps Paul VI shut out St. John’s; Gonzaga outlasts DeMatha in WCAC soccer championships

The final whistle sounded and Paul VI' s Gretchen Bennett collapsed, face down, onto the grass field at Maryland SoccerPlex. After securing a 1-0 victory over St. John's in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference final and seventh consecutive clean sheet, the sophomore goalkeeper and her teammates could finally relax.

A championship drought dating to 1993 — when the league was called the Catholic Girls Athletic Association — was finally over.

No. 6 Paul VI (13-1) spent most of Saturday night's game in Boyds defending its own net, leaning heavily on its defense and goalkeeping. Bennett turned away 17 shots, diving for some, jumping for others and putting her body on the line. When the game ended, she was swarmed by teammates.
