PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Azzi Fudd, G, Fr., St. John's
One of the most hyped freshmen in recent high school basketball history, Fudd exceeded expectations in her first year at St. John's. Facing some of the best defenders in the area throughout Washington Catholic Athletic Conference play, she averaged 24 points, which ranked third in the area. In January, she put up back-to-back 41-point games. She led the region in three-pointers with 102 and paired her outside game with a quick first step that let her get to the basket at will. The Cadets won the WCAC title for the second consecutive season and the DCSAA championship for the fourth time in five years.
FIRST TEAM
Shakira Austin, F, Sr., Riverdale Baptist
After transferring from Colgan High in Manassas, Austin became one of the most feared post players in the area. Averaging 18 points, the Maryland signee led the Crusaders to a 22-5 record against local and national opponents.
Jakia Brown-Turner, F, Jr., Bishop McNamara
Brown-Turner helped the Mustangs to a third-place finish in the WCAC with an all-around offensive game. Her 45-point, seven-rebound performance against New York's Monsignor Scanlan in January only increased the interest in her from Division I programs.
Jordyn Callaghan, G, Sr., Langley
Co-Player of the Year in the Liberty Conference and a four-year starter for the Saxons, Callaghan hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to send her team to its second Virginia Class 6 championship game in three years.
Amira Collins, F, Sr., Paul VI
The Tennessee signee represented half of the most feared duo in the area, providing the inside counterpart to Ashley Owusu's outside game at Paul VI. Averaging 17.6 points, she helped the Panthers to a second-place finish in the WCAC.
Clara Ford, F, Sr., Marshall
A dominant post player, Ford led Marshall to the Virginia Class 6 state playoffs by averaging 18.3 points. She will play at Boston College.
Ashia McCalla, G, Sr., Eleanor Roosevelt
The Morgan State recruit capped her high school career by scoring 29 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the Raiders' Maryland 4A championship win.
Mya Moye, G, Sr., Anacostia
The DCIAA player of the year gave the Indians plenty of highlights, but scoring 50 points in the conference championship game tops a lengthy list.
Devyne Newman, G, Sr., Herndon
The heart of Herndon's offense, Newman averaged 20 points for a team that won 10 of its first 11 games. She will play at Saint Joseph's.
Ashley Owusu, G, Jr., Paul VI
The Maryland commitment continued her development as one of the area's best all-around guards, providing lock-down defense on the WCAC's biggest scorers and averaging 19.2 points.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Kelli Cofield, Long Reach
In her eighth year at Long Reach, Cofield continued her steady improvement of the team by guiding it to the Maryland 3A title game, the first in school history. The Lightning used a 15-1 start to capture a share of the Howard County title and then continued its success in the postseason.
