Carroll Boys' Win 4x100 -meter relay at New Balance Nationals Outdoor

Archbishop Carroll's heralded sprinters nearly blew their shot at this weekend's New Balance Nationals Outdoor meet.

On Friday, they got disqualified for an exchange infraction in the boys' 4x200-meter relay finals, then one of their runners was disqualified in Sunday's 200 finals.

But the Lions wouldn't be denied in the 4x100 finals Sunday evening. Kendall Leach, Justin Davis, Maxwell Willis and Stedman Cook blew through that race in a U.S. No. 5 time of 40.39 seconds, edging Western Branch (Va.) by 0.46 seconds for the national title in Greensboro, N.C.

"Our coach always tells us that runners have to shake things off," Leach said. "At the end of the day, if you're a great runner, you just have to bounce back and go to the next race."

Leach and his teammates didn't just bounce back from disappointment. They also excelled 20 minutes after their big win, finishing second in the 4x400 relay. Their mark of 3 minutes 11.95 seconds in that event signaled a new U.S. No. 2 time.

Bullis secured fifth in the girls' 4x400 in 3:44.54. The Bulldogs also finished fifth in the girls' 4x100 (46.69), one spot behind Elizabeth Seton (46.63).

Chantilly junior Brandon McGorty took fourth place in the 800. McGorty finished in 1:50.43, just over a second slower than Southview (Ohio) senior Frank Hayes's winning time
