Just before the DeMatha basketball team started its season earlier this month, Stags players gathered in a big room in one of the buildings on the Hyattsville campus for a retreat.
The purpose of the get-together was to generate chemistry. The Stags lost a few key seniors to graduation and added three transfers over the summer. Team-building exercises were meant to be fun, but conversations, guard Jahmir Young said, kept turning back to basketball.
Such focus is the norm for No. 2 DeMatha, Coach Mike Jones said, after a 69-51 victory at No. 6 St. John's on Friday night. Jones lauded his team's depth and selflessness as DeMatha (5-0, 2-0 WCAC) put three players in double figures.
