Teddy Zinsner trudged off the University of Maryland golf course with his head hung low at the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship Tuesday evening.
The Gonzaga junior brooded over a round that had started poorly, with two bogeys on the first three holes, and ended poorly, with a three-putt bogey on No. 17.
But when Zinsner muttered his final score at the scorer's table a few minutes later, he was met with a surprising response.
"You won," the scorekeeper said matter-of-factly.
Zinsner carded a 2-over-par 73 on the 6,369-yard layout in College Park, three shots clear of an eight-way tie for second place.
Once greeted with this news, the smiles flowed easily and frequently for Zinsner, who also learned that his Gonzaga team had won the four-team competition by 12 strokes.
