Holy Cross Junior IB Students Raise Funds for Holy Cross School in India

Every year the Junior International Baccalaureate Diploma Students work together on a service project that is global in nature. This year seven students, Elizabeth Bruno ’17, Erin Hicks ’17, Jacqueline Kerlin ’17, Emma Kosters ’17, Lauren O’Leary ’17, Isabella Orgel ’17, and Julia Urban ’17, selected the Salka Holy Cross School run by the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Barakathal, India as their focus. They researched the geographical area, the economy, and the education system in India, and specifically girls’ education.

During an all-school assembly on Monday, April 4, the students presented an overview of their research and information about the Salka Holy Cross School. Throughout the week of April4-8 the students coordinated several fundraising events including a pizza sale, a prom ticket raffle, a tag day, and a teacher vs. student Dodgeball tournament on Friday, April 8. Students donated money throughout the week to vote for the teachers to play in the tournament and to play against them. Students could also buy popcorn and baked goods during the tournament. The activities raised approximately $1,700 for the cause.

The project is part of the Creativity, Action, Service component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
